SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Despite a hat trick by senior attacker Carmen Eggert, 16th-ranked UC Davis was unable to hold off a late surge by No. 7 San Diego State, falling 9-7 in Big West Conference women's water polo action at the SDSU Aquaplex Friday afternoon.
The Aggies fall to 10-10 overall and remain winless at 0-3 in Big West play. The Aztecs improve to 12-7 for the year and 2-1 in conference games.
Besides Eggert's three goals, senior Jessica Dunn added two while Erin Schlueter and Elsie Fullerton each netted one. For SDSU, senior Amber Pezzolla, senior Alex Ford and sophomore Taelor Moreno each scored two goals.
After surrendering the contest's first goal, UC Davis scored four of the next five to craft a 4-2 halftime lead. Eggert netted a natural goal in the first quarter then converted a five-meter penalty shot with 2:16 in the second as part of that offensive stretch. However, Pezzolla scored two in a run of three straight SDSU goals early in the third quarter to retake the lead at 5-4.
Schlueter's goal equalized to 5-5 with 2:29 in the third but Aztec driver Samantha Voigt and Ford scored back-to-back to put SDSU in front by a 7-5 margin. Dunn halved the deficit on the next possession then Eggert converted a power play with 4:28 to tie the match at 7-7. Unfortunately for the Aggies, Moreno exploded for two goals in the final three minutes to push the Aztecs to victory.
UC Davis remains in San Diego to compete in Day 1 of the Aztec Invitational, facing Princeton and UC San Diego at 8 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., respectively.
