DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Elsie Fullerton scored four goals, including two of her team's seven power-play goals, but 14th-ranked Indiana held on to an 11-10 win over No. 15 UC Davis in non-conference women's collegiate water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies even their record at 11-11. The Hoosiers avenge a one-goal loss from February 9 to improve to 11-3 for the year.
Fullerton had three goals in the first quarter, then added a fourth on a 6-on-5 chance in the third. Sophomore Ariel Arcidiacono added two goals while Hannah Curran, Allyson Hansen, Keelia Houston and Carla Tocchini each chipped in exclusion goals. Hansen also tallied four assists, three drawn kickouts and two steals for UC Davis.
For Indiana, senior attacker Shae Fournier scored four, with two coming on five-meter penalties drawn by junior Rebecca Gerrity. Summer Creighton had another two perimeter goals for the Hoosiers.
The lead exchanged hands four times after Fournier drew first blood on a counterattack to open the contest. Arcidiacono scored on a power play, starting goalie Haley Cameron stopped a five-meter shot and Fullerton hit a pair of goals to put UC Davis up by a 3-1 margin with a minute left in the first. Creighton bombed in a shot from eight meters out to halve the margin, then Fullerton completed her hat trick on a 6-on-5 chance with 17 ticks left in the frame.
However, Indiana put up six goals in the second quarter -- including three from Fournier's hand -- to take an 8-6 lead at the halftime break. UC Davis answered with three straight power-play goals in the third to regain a 9-8 lead: Houston at the 6:21 mark, Fullerton with 3:38 left, then Arcidiacono for the go-ahead goal at 1:48.
Junior attacker Colleen McNaught tied the contest on an outside shot with 0:49 remaining in the third. That ignited a 3-0 run for Indiana, which added goals by Meghan Lappan and Shelby Taylor in the fourth. Taylor also posted two key steals at two meters to help the Hoosiers protect their lead, including an entry pass with just 22 seconds left in regulation. IU ran out the clock to protect its win.
The Aggies break for the university's final examinations before beginning Big West Conference play at home against UC Santa Barbara on March 29.
