Penalty Shots Help Decide Game As Aggies Hold On Against Hawks

March 29, 2005

DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Christi Raycraft scored three goals -- including a pair of four-meter penalty shots -- while teammate Jessi Lafayette tallied three fourth-quarter assists as UC Davis held on to a10-9 victory over Hartwick College in the first of three non-conference collegiate women's water polo games at Schaal Aquatics Center Tuesday.

The Aggies improve to 12-11 on the season. The Hawks, who snapped an 11-game winning streak, drop to 14-5.

Katherine O'Rourke and Jessica Soza each scored two goals for UC Davis. Hartwick was led by Brownen Knox and Kate Chambers, who each scored hat tricks. However, the Hawks shot 0-for-3 in penalty shots.

Hartwick took its biggest lead midway into the second period when Sophie Smith assisted Knox for a goal, establishing a 3-1 lead. Two minutes later, Aggie sophomore Cassie Schaefer drew a four-meter foul on a counterattack. Raycraft converted the shot to cut the lead to one. Then on the next possession, O'Rourke hit the lower left corner of the cage on her own counterattack opportunity to tie game at 3-3.

Soza scored a two-meter goal on a Raycraft assist in the final minute before halftime, but Chambers sent a long lob into the UC Davis cage on the next possession to retie the score at 4-4 for the break.

Hartwick briefly regained the lead early in the third period on Smith's 6-on-5 goal. That did not last long, however, as Raycraft scored a two-meter goal just 11 seconds later.

With 4:01 remaining in the third, Hartwick earned a chance to regain the lead when Knox drew a four-meter ejection from Soza. However, her penalty shot missed wide right. Less than two minutes later, Vonya Thomas drew another chance for a penalty shot but Aggie goalie saved Keri James' conversion attempt.

With 1:24 left in the third, the tables turned as O'Rourke drew a four-meter exclusion. Raycraft made her attempt and the Aggies regained the lead at 6-5. Nonetheless, that edge proved to be short-lived as Chambers scored her second goal just 18 ticks later to tie the game at 6-6.

Schaefer assisted on a Katherine O'Rourke goal to give UC Davis a 7-6 lead in the final stages of the third period, then early in the fourth quarter, Casie Mota fired at the nearside of the Hartwick cage to send the advantage to two goals. Then at 4:40 in the fourth, Lafeyette sent an entry pass to Soza, who redirected the ball past Hartwick goalie Olivia Colebourne. Soza's goal gave the Aggies a 9-6, their widest lead of the game.

On the Hawks' next possession, Knox drew yet another four-meter foul but Smith's penalty attempt sailed high. Chambers cut the lead to 9-7 on a strong counterattack at 3:53, but Lafayette delivered another assist, this time to Cassie Schaefer, to push the lead back to three goals.

Knox scored on a short offspeed shot to trim the Aggie lead to 10-8, then James scored a 6-on-5 goal under the one-minute mark to close Hartwick into a one-goal game.

With less than a minute remaining, UC Davis opted to run down the shot clock. Raycraft found herself one-on-one at two meters, so she took a shot that Colebourne saved. However, the ball deflected beyond the baseline, allowing the Aggies another chance to burn off the remaining time and preserve the win.

Colebourne posted six saves for Hartwick while counterpart Moore had three saves in the UC Davis cage.

This was the first of two games for each team Tuesday. Hartwick faces Cal St. Monterey Bay in the 3 p.m. game, followed by the Aggie-Otter matchup at 6 p.m.
