LONG BEACH, Calif. - Despite a hat trick by junior center Greta Kohlmoos, No. 11 UC Davis failed to overcome a 6-2 halftime deficit before falling, 12-9, to No. 16 Long Beach in Big West Conference women’s water polo action at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.The Aggies even their overall record to 14-14 and their conference mark to 2-1. The 49ers improve to 15-9 for the year, and 2-1 in Big West play. Kohlmoos hit a power-play goal in the first quarter, then another exclusion goal plus a tally from two meters to compile her eighth hat trick of the season. Sophomore Annie Kutt added two goals, both on 6-on-5 opportunities in the fourth quarter, while junior Paige Virgil, sophomore McKenna Hauss, senior Hannah Harvey and junior Sammy Preston each added one score. For LBSU, junior Virginia Smith netted three goals while Tori Morrissey, Christina Kotsia and Alexandra Massier each added two. Kohlmoos drew a five-meter foul and Virgil hit the ensuing penalty shot for the game’s first goal, then Kohlmoos converted a power play to equalize at 2-2 with three minutes left in the opening quarter. However, Long Beach State answered with five unanswered: three straight to finish the first quarter, the lone goal in the second frame to make it 6-2 at halftime, plus a Morrissey goal to start the third. UC Davis responded with four of the next five goals to cut the margin to 8-6 heading to the fourth. Hauss and Kohlmoos connected on back-to-back scores at 7:01 and 5:41, respectively. Harvey answered a Smith counterattack goal, then Kohlmoos completed her hat trick with 2:01 left in the third. Unfortunately for the Aggies, LBSU maintained at least a two-goal edge the rest of the way. The 49ers scored twice to start the fourth, extending their advantage to 10-6. Kutt converted two power-play opportunities and Preston buried an outside shot, ultimately reducing the gap to 11-9 with 30 ticks left. Long Beach State scored one more in the final seconds to seal the win. UC Davis, which hosts the Big West Conference Championship later in April, continues league play with a home game against Hawai’i on Sunday, April 8.
