DAVIS, Calif. - Junior hole setter Drue Wawrzynski scored four goals - including a hat trick in the first half - to lead fourth-ranked Long Beach State to a 13-3 win over UC Davis in a women's collegiate water polo game at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday.
The 49ers improve to 15-5 on the season. The Aggies, ranked 13th in last week's coaches' poll, drops to 18-10 overall.
Wawrzynski scored two goals in the first quarter while teammate Angelica Garcia added another as LBSU took a 3-1 lead after five minutes of play. Brittany Russell scored first for UC Davis, finding the 49er cage with 2:24 remaining in the first period.
"Before the game, I only wrote two numbers up - No. 3 [Wawrzynski] and No. 4 [Garcia], and 90 percent of the time was spent on No. 3," said Aggie head coach Jamey Wright. "We needed to shut her down, we needed to foul her hard, even if we get an ejection. But I told them not to let her get her grip on the ball. Instead, we just gave them shots.
"That was a disappointment because if you take that part of it away, we played pretty good front-court defense. They got most of their scoring opportunities from that problem and from our turning over the ball on offense."
Long Beach ran ahead to an 8-1 margin at halftime, getting two goals from Roberta Stewart and pair of 6-on-5 goals from junior Robyn Gordin. Goalkeeper Bri Hawkins posted five of her 11 total saves in the first half, and added three steals before the break.
Aggie senior Tiffany Hodgens launched the second half with a goal from seven meters on her team's first possession, but Wawrzynski answered with her fourth goal just 24 seconds later to bring the margin to 9-2. UC Davis had several opportunities to cut the lead as LBSU was called for a total of six ejections in that third period. However, the Aggies failed to convert on any one of the 6-on-5 matchups.
Cassie Azevedo punched in a four-meter penalty shot with just less than three minutes remaining in the third, putting the 49ers in double figures. Then Sammy Junod and Chirstina Wensman scored goals in the final minute of play to give Long Beach a 13-2 lead through three periods.
Junod added a goal midway through the fourth quarter, then UC Davis sophomore Kristin Pfaff fired in a shot from the one position with 44 ticks remaining in the game.
The Aggies remain at home for a game against Pacific on April 10.
