IRVINE, Calif. - Sixth-ranked UC Irvine scored five unanswered goals out of the gates to claim a 10-4 win over No. 10 UC Davis in Big West Conference women's water polo action at Anteater Aquatics Center Saturday. The Aggies, who ended their eight-game win streak, were led by junior Carmen Eggert's two goals.
UC Davis moves to 13-12 overall and evens its Big West record to 1-1. UCI improves to 20-5 for the year and remains unbeaten at 3-0 in league play.
In additon to Eggert, junior Jessica Dunn and freshman Elsie Fullerton each had one goal. For the Anteaters, Jessy Cardey, Michaela Pierandozzi and sisters Katie and Hannah Croghan tallied two goals apiece. Riane Woods and Rachel Tatusko combined for eight saves for the Aggies, while their UCI counterpart Kate Avetoom had 10.
The Anteaters put up three goals in the first quarter and two more early in the second before allowing UC Davis on the board with Eggert's first goal at the 5:25 mark. However, the Aggies never closed the gap by less than four goals: UCI held an 8-3 halftime lead, stretched the margin to six on Pierandozzi's two-meter goal in the third, then played even ball in the fourth to protect the win.
UC Davis travels to Long Beach State for its final road game of the year. Sunday's game begins at noon.
