LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior utility Jessica Dunn scored four goals while junior attacker Carmen Eggert added three to lead 10th-ranked UC Davis to a 15-10 win over Long Beach State in a Big West Conference women's water polo contest at Campus Pool Sunday.
With the win, the Aggies improve to 14-12 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The 49ers, among the teams receiving votes in Wednesday's national coaches' poll, move to 11-14 for the year and 1-3 in Big West action.
Eggert scored all three of her goals in the first half while Dunn posted three of her four after the break. Senior Alicia Began added two scores while six other UC Davis players had one each. Junior goalkeeper Riane Woods tallied seven saves in three quarters of work.
For LBSU, Heather McKeon, Julia Garyfallou and Coriann Snyder each delivered a hat trick.
The Aggies never trailed in the contest. Eggert hit the game's first goal less than two minutes in, then converted a 6-on-5 chance with 1:32 remaining to make it 2-0. Snyder and McKeon each had power-play goals to keep the 49ers within a 3-2 deficit before Eggert's third kicked off a run of four unanswered. Dunn hit a five-meter penalty shot, then senior Ariel Feeney and Began netted natural goals to extend the UC Davis lead to 7-2.
Sophomore Hannah Curran fired in a 6-on-5 goal with six seconds remaining in the second half to set the halftime board at 8-4 and start another 4-0 UC Davis run. The game's closest margin was four goals -- on another McKeon 6-on-5 goal -- for the rest of the way.
Dunn hit two player-up goals in the third period, then posted her fourth goal of the game on another five-meter penalty shot midway through the final period.
Sunday's game is the Aggies' final road game of the regular season. They host UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge in continued Big West action on April 14 and 15.
