No. 8 UC Davis falls to No.17 UCSB

April 15, 2018

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Sophomore attacker Kathleen Schafle led the No. 8 Aggies with a hat trick against the No. 17-ranked and fellow Big West school UC Santa Barbara; however, it was the Gauchos that came away with the 9-5 win over the visiting team at the Campus Pool on Saturday afternoon.

After their loss against UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis drops to a 18-9 overall record, and a 3-2 record in the Big West Conference.

It was a slow start in the pool for UC Davis because it was not until 30 seconds into the second quarter of the game where Schafle found the first opportunity to score a goal for the Aggies. Following after Schafle’s efforts, the Gauchos pushed through to maintain their one-point lead by scoring their second goal of the game; however, the home team’s lead was short-lived as junior utility Annie Kutt and then Schafle scored two more UC Davis goals during the quarter to even the game at a temporary 3-3 score entering into the second half of the match.

Despite the Aggie’s efforts in keeping up with the UC Santa Barbara powerhouse, the latter of the two teams bumped up their offense to eventually conclude their play with a four-point lead.

For the scoring that took place in the third quarter, the Gauchos were able to put in two goals before senior utility Carla Tocchini and Schafle were able to respond with back-to-back goals of their own; however, the opposing team rounded out the quarter with two additional goals to bring them to a two-point lead over the No. 8-ranked team entering the final quarter.

Unfortunately, UC Davis was unable to score a goal in the fourth quarter of the game, while the UC Santa Barbara pushed through to tally up two more goals to finish their time in the pool with a final 9-5 upset victory over the Aggies.

The UC Davis women’s water polo team returns to action next weekend to host Cal at the Schaal Aquatics Center at noon for their final home match of the 2018 season.
