DAVIS, Calif. --- Senior driver Missy Duncan scored three goals
to lead UC Davis to a 17-0 shutout over UC Santa Cruz in a women's Western
Water Polo Association game at Hickey Pool Saturday. The win represents
the first shutout for the program since 1999, when the Aggies blanked Chapman
in the WWPA playoffs.
UC Davis improves to 18-10 on the season.
Shannon McGee, Jenny Booth, Nicole Lorrimer and Kristin Pfaff each added
two goals for the Aggies, while goalie Kelsey Whalen posted four saves in
net.
"We had counterattack opportunities present themselves, so we didn't
get to run our actual offense," said UC Davis head coach Jamey Wright.
"The best thing was that the seniors got their recognition and everyone
got their minutes. Overall, it was a good final game for Hickey Pool."
Graduating seniors Duncan, Booth, Whalen, McGee, Beth Jay and Mary Dentice
were honored by the team during pregame ceremonies.
Duncan had two of UC Davis' four goals in the first quarter, then four
different players each added a score in the second period. Pfaff converted
a 6-on-5 goal and an even-strength goal as part of a six-point third period,
giving the Aggies a 14-0 lead entering the fourth quarter. In all, 11 different
UC Davis players scored in the win.
UC Davis will compete at the WWPA Championships in Bakersfield from April
25-27. The Aggies will likely be the second seed in the tourney. The conference
champion earns an automatic berth at the NCAA Championships in May.
