DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Kathryn Bailey assisted goals by Carmen Eggert and Hannah Curran in the first two minutes of overtime, lifting 18th-ranked UC Davis to a 6-4 win over No. 20 Pacific in Big West Conference women's water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center on Saturday.
The Aggies improve to 14-15 for the year and pick up their first conference win to finish the Big West slate at 1-6. The Tigers slip to 16-13 overall and 1-6 in league play. UC Davis will win the tiebreaker for the seventh seed at the Big West Conference tournament due to Saturday's outcome.
Senior Jessica Dunn scored two goals in the first half while sophomores Keelia Houston and Elsie Fullerton each tallied one in the third period to round out the Aggie scoring total. Senior goalkeeper Riane Woods posted 11 saves, including two against Pacific power-play attempts. Bailey assisted on all but one of UC Davis' goals.
For the Tigers, junior Elise Martin scored two goals while Taylor Adair, Gracie Smith and Brydie Pye each netted one. Junior goalie Michele Relton recorded 12 stops.
Dunn hit a 6-on-5 goal early in the first quarter and Adair scored on a bar-in for an exclusion goal to open the game with a 1-1 tie through the first eight minutes. However, Pacific stormed to a 4-2 lead on three unanswered goals in the second. Pye's skip shot rattled into the Aggie cage with 1:05 minute to give the Tigers a two-goal edge.
UC Davis managed to erase the deficit in the third as Bailey assisted Fullerton at two meters with 3:18 to go then dished to Houston on a counterattack with eight ticks left.
Neither team scored in the fourth although Houston nearly ended the game in regulation. Dunn managed a steal against Pacific with 1.4 seconds remaining. UC Davis called a timeout to set up a catch-and-shoot play, but Relton stopped Houston's sweep shot to force the overtime periods.
Bailey found Eggert and Curran down low on successive possessions in the first three-minute segment of overtime, bringing the score to 6-4 in the Aggies' favor. Martin halved the lead with her shot from the two spot with 1:24 left. Bailey gave UC Davis a chance to extend its margin back to two on a 6-on-5 chance but Relton came up with the block.
Neither team scored in the second three-minute segment of overtime. Gracie Smith and Adair each fired shots for the Tigers, but Woods stopped the first while the second sailed wide of the cage. The Aggies gained final possession with 16 seconds left and successfully ran out the clock.
With the 6-5 win, all seven of UC Davis' Big West contests were settled by two goals or fewer. Saturday's win also represented Senior Day for the Aggies, honoring Dunn, Eggert, Woods, Bailey, center Danelle Kenny and attacker Hannah Breen.
UC Davis will await its first-round foe for the conference championship, hosted by UC Irvine from Apr. 26-28.
