LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Seniors Brittany Russell and Alli Johnstone each scored three goals to lead UC Davis to a 13-6 win over Cal St. San Bernardino in the first round of the Western Water Polo Association tournament Friday. The Aggies advance to the semifinal of the tournament, which is hosted by defending champion Loyola Marymount.

With the win, 12th-ranked UC Davis improves to 20-10. It is the sixth straight season with 20 or more wins for the program.

Russell scored her first two goals as part of a 3-0 start after three minutes of play. Sophomore Kristin Pfaff, who finished with two goals, also scored in that run. The Coyotes managed to cut the lead to 4-3, but the Aggies continued on a 7-1 run through the next two quarters. UC Davis led 8-4 at the halftime break, then 11-4 after the third quarter.

"I told our team that San Bernardino was a scrappy group, and that if we left the door open just an inch, they would knock it down," said Aggie head coach Jamey Wright. "The key was coming out strong, countering early and getting some goals."

Senior Tiffany Hodgens added two goals while teammates Nicole Lorrimer, Jessi Lafayette and Cassie Schaefer added one each. Schaefer's score, the team's 13th on the day, represented her first collegiate goal.

Nicole Hall and Amber Korner split goalkeeping duties for UC Davis. Hall had eight saves and an assist in three quarters of work. Korner closed the win with four saves in the final quarter, including one on a four-meter penalty shot.

Sarah Reneker scored two goals to lead CSUSB, which drops to 21-15 on the year. The Aggies face UC San Diego in the tournament semifinal at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Tritons easily beat Cal St. Hayward by a 13-3 final in Friday's action. The winner of the WWPA tournament earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship.
