April 23, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior center Greta Kohlmoos netted three goals while junior Paige Virgil and senior Hannah Harvey each scored twice, helping UC Davis transform a 6-3 deficit into a 12-9 win over Santa Clara in a non-conference women's water polo game at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies close out their regular season at 15-16. The Broncos slip to 8-20 overall.

Five other UC Davis players scored one goal each. Sophomore Annie Kutt in the first quarter. Sophomore McKenna Hauss, junior Heather Johnson and sophomore Marcela Portales each in the third. Freshman Audrey Taylor added another in the fourth.

For Santa Clara, senior driver Cathy Cantoni led all players with four goals while sophomore Annie Eldridge added another three. Senior goalie Francesca Puccinelli posted 12 saves.

Although Harvey drew first blood for UC Davis, the Broncos quickly crafted a 3-1 edge by the midway mark of the opening frame. That lead increased to 6-3 on Cantoni's hat trick goal at the 4:15 mark of the second quarter. Kohlmoos scored out of set to halt the run and cut the deficit to 6-4 at the halftime break, then UC Davis poured in four more goals in the span of four minutes in the third quarter to take an 8-6 lead. Johnson's counter goal with 3:25 left represented the go-ahead.

The Aggies extended their streak to seven unanswered with goals by Kohlmoos and Harvey to start the fourth, increasing the margin to 10-6. The Broncos managed to battle back to within two down the stretch, but UC Davis halted their guests on four straight power plays to protect the lead.

The Aggies also honored four seniors prior the game: Harvey, Daniela Hernandez, Emily Perry and Avery Dotterer. UC Davis hosts the Big West Conference championship this Friday through Sunday.
