BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- Junior driver Alli Johnstone scored a
career-high five goals to lead UC Davis to a 14-2 win over UC Santa Cruz
in the first round of the women's Western Water Polo Association tournament
Friday at Cal St. Bakersfield.
The Aggies, winner of eight straight, improve to 19-10 on the season.
The Banana Slugs drop to 5-25 for the year.
Senior two-meter Melissa Agee added two goals for UC Davis, which led
7-1 at the half and 11-2 after three quarters. Seven other Aggies -- Missy
Duncan, Jenny Booth, Kristin Pfaff, Jessi Lafayette, Mary Dentice, Michael
Brady and Nicole Lorrimer.
Kelsey Whalen and Nicole Ho split halves in net for UC Davis, recording
four and three saves, respectively.
"I thought we came out a little flat in the first quarter, then
picked it up in the second," said Aggie head coach Jamey Wright. "Alli
got us going -- she got a lot of 'one-against-nobody' opportunities. It
sounds like an easy shot, but it really isn't. We worked on that this week
and she looked like a stud."
UC Davis will face UC San Diego in the tournament semifinals Saturday.
The Aggies are 2-1 against the Tritons this season, including a 6-4 win
in Bakersfield on April 5.
