IRVINE, Calif. - Five different Aggies each scored one goal as 18th-ranked and seventh-seeded UC Davis dropped its first-round contest to sixth-ranked and second-seeded UC Irvine, 8-5, at the Big West Conference women's water polo championship tournament hosted at the Anteater Aquatics Complex Friday afternoon.
The Aggies slip to 14-16 for the year. They will face the loser of the San Diego State-UC Santa Barbara game at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Kathryn Bailey, junior Hannah Curran, senior Carmen Eggert, senior Jessica Dunn and sophomore Paige Oreglia scored one goal apiece for UC Davis, in that order. Senior Riane Woods posted five saves in front of the Aggie cage. For UCI, junior defender Hilary Estrada tallied three goals while freshman Cambria Shockley added two. Sophomore Jilian Yocum tallied 12 goalie stops in defense of the `Eater goal.
UCI never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Kelsey Thornton and Estrada in the first quarter. Bailey put UC Davis on the board with a 6-on-5 goal with 13 ticks left in the period, but the Anteaters extended their edge immediately in the second: Hannah Croghan fired a 6-on-5 goal bar-in on the opening possession then Estrada hit a long lob at the 5:05 mark.
Curran cut into the UCI lead when she converted an assist from Erin Schlueter for a weakside goal with 3:45 to go, but the Anteaters again answered with back-to-back scores. McKenna Mitchell scored from two meters and Shockley hit an outside shot to bring the score to 6-2 at halftime.
UCI continued to pull away in the third as Kelsey Klatt drew a kickout at 6:45 and Estrada completed her hat trick with a lob from the five spot, completing yet another power play. Then Shockley scored two minutes later to push the `Eater lead to 8-2.
UC Davis scored three goals down the stretch. Eggert walked up and fired from four meters out to cut the deficit to five with 54 seconds left in the third. Woods posted a steal at two meters and swatted a UCI shot early in the third before a long bomb out of Dunn's hands found its way into the Anteater cage. That goal made it 8-4 with 3:40 left while Oreglia's blast from the right wing brought the score to its final 8-5 with 2:07 left.
UC Davis has now lost 19 straight contests to the four-time Big West Champion, a series streak dating back to pair of Aggie victories in the 2004 season.
