Junior Casie Mota scored three goals while four other Aggies each added two, leading UC Davis to a 16-5 win over Colorado State in first-round action at the Western Water Polo Association Championships at UC Santa Cruz Friday.

The top-seeded Aggies, ranked ninth in Wednesday's National Collegiate Top 20, improve to 24-6 overall. The Rams, seeded ninth in the tournament, fall to 9-18 for the year.

Katherine O'Rourke, Lindsay Kiyama, Mary Lowe and Sarah Odegard each had two goals for UC Davis. Mota, O'Rourke and Kiyama each scored two in an eight-goal third quarter, helping the Aggies pull away from a surprisingly slim 4-2 halftime edge.

Five different CSU players scored one goal each. Emily Chambers put the Rams on the board at the 5:16 mark in the second quarter, then Laurien White added a score with under a minute in the first half to cut the deficit to two goals. However, Lowe's 6-on-5 conversion early in the third ignited a quick 3-0 run in a span of less than 90 seconds, effectively putting the game out of reach for UC Davis.

Odegaard, a sophomore who had scored just five goals in 16 games this season, had both of her goals in the fourth. The Aggies held the Rams scoreless in the final 4:42 while connecting on four goals of their own.

UC Davis faces off with fourth-seeded UC San Diego in Saturday's semifinal at 3:00 p.m. The Tritons edged Cal State San Bernardino, 12-9, in Friday's fifth game. Second-seeded Loyola Marymount also advanced, easily disposing of No. 7 Cal State East Bay by a 19-2 final.
