TO RECAP: UC Davis (2-4), which moved up a click to No. 15 in the January 25 national poll, lost a tough 10-9 battle to 5th-ranked San Jose State to open Saturday's action at the Speedo Invite... Junior Jessica Dunn scored four goals, including a pair on 6-on-5 situations... The Aggies battled back from a two-goal deficit to hold an 8-7 lead late in the third period before the Spartans answered with three straight... In Saturday's finale, sophomore Hannah Curran punched in three goals against No. 1 Stanford... Seniors Ariel Feeney and Carey Faber each had two-goal games during the tournament: Feeney vs. SJSU, Faber vs. Stanford.
UP NEXT: The tough early season schedule continues for UC Davis at the Stanford Invitational this weekend... The Aggies rematch against the Cardinal in the tournament opener, then face San Jose State for the third time in as many weekends... UC Davis will take on No. 3 USC on Sunday, then compete for a place that afternoon...
The Stanford Invite field is one of the toughest eight-team tournament of the year, including the NCAA Championship... The remainder of the field comprises No. 2 California, No. 4 UCLA, No. 10 Hawai'i and No. 13 Michigan... In comparison, last year's national tournament had the Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10, 14 and 20 teams.
STANFORD (2-0) combined for 36 goals in its wins over UC Davis and Loyola Marymount at the Speedo Invitational... Freshman Kiley Neushul won MPSF Newcomer of the Week honors for scoring three goals in each... Ashley Grossman also had hat tricks in both games... SAN JOSE STATE (5-0) nipped the Aggies on a hat trick by Anna Natalizio, then Timi Molnar and Allie Stewart each had three goals in a 12-6 victory over Cal Baptist... Senior Dani Curran netted two goals in each win... USC (0-0) took part in a scrimmage with UCLA back on January 14 but has been idle for the two weeks since... The Women of Troy open their 2012 season against SJSU immediately after the UC Davis-Stanford game... Sophomore goalie Flora Bolonyai, senior driver Nadia Dan and junior 2-meter Patricia Jancso each captured ACWPC All-America status last year.
HEAD COACH JAMEY WRIGHT:
"I heard a really good quote from a football coach, who said offensive teams try to create space and defensive teams try to take space away. When offenses move in too much, defenders don't have to go very far to help. They can split easier, they can gap - it just makes everything more frantic for the offense. When you spread out, you're farther from the goal but you have more room to move the ball around. Then when you have an opening, you can attack and the defense has to go farther to help. They become more fatigued. So this week, we're working on protecting the ball, staying spread out and on transition defense."
On facing San Jose State and Stanford in back-to-back weeks: "This is another opportunity to see if we do things better than we did last year. But conversely, it's not like San Jose or Stanford are taking the week off. San Jose is looking at it, thinking their fifth-ranked and we're 15th, they should be doing a lot better than a one-goal game. So they'll come back to really make a concerted effort against us."
"We have a lot of room for improvement against Stanford. That will be an enjoyable game to me. From their perspective, they know they are a more athletic team so I don't think it's very interesting to them. It's more interesting for us to play them than it is for them to play us.
