TO RECAP: No. 15 UC Davis posted a 12-4 win against Fresno State then scored victories over Cal State San Bernardino and Brown at the Roadrunner Invitational... The three wins brought Aggie head coach Jamey Wright to his 300th during the varsity era of the women's water polo program (the veteran coach likely won that many during the club years prior to 1997)... The team and parents greeted Coach Wright in a fitting manner: by lining up several hundred diet cola cans in shape of the numerals 3-0-0 on the pool deck... Wright entered the 2010 season with a 286-162 record in 13 varsity seasons.
Freshman Carly Ternasky led UC Davis in scoring over the weekend, totaling 10 goals in the five games, including a career-high five in Sunday's 14-4 win over Cal State San Bernardino... Lefty fireballer Carey Faber tallied eight goals in the tournament, leading the Aggies with a hat trick against No. 20 UC San Diego on Saturday... Freshman Jessica Dunn (vs. CSUB) and Dana Nelsen (vs. CSSB) also scored three-goal games during the Roadrunner Invite... Freshman Carmen Eggert, a former member of the U.S. Junior National squad, made her collegiate debut in Bakersfield... She tallied three goals with seven steals and two blocks in 77 minutes of tank time.
RANKINGS: UC Davis held the No. 15 spot for the eighth straight week... The losses to No. 18 Bakersfield and No. 20 UCSD mark the first time the Aggies have fallen to a lower-ranked team... With the Big West Conference season on the horizon, five of the league's six members rank among the top 20: Cal State Northridge at No. 10, UC Santa Barbara at No. 12, UC Irvine at No. 13, UC Davis at No. 15 and Pacific at No. 17... The sixth team, Long Beach State, moved into the Receiving Votes category on March 3... The 49ers have nabbed two votes in each poll since... The new national coaches' poll will be announced on April 2.
UP NEXT: The Aggies now enter the Big West Conference portion of the 2010 slate, taking on Pacific on Saturday at noon... The Tigers faced leaguemates UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine at the UCSB Invite, falling by scores of 8-5 and 9-6, respectively... Freshman Jasmine Myles scored two goals with two steals in Sunday's loss to the Anteaters... She entered the weekend as the Big West's scoring leader, having netted 56 goals in 21 games... Junior Dara Tawarahara ranked third in the standings with 43 goals... Freshman goalkeeper Brooke Millar has 180 saves against 131 goals this season.
HEAD COACH JAMEY WRIGHT:
"You go into that tournament thinking you have a good chance to go 4-0. We ended up having three tough games. The benefits are that we'll play a lot of close games in conference. I was glad to get into situations where every goal matters and the fourth quarter is tight. We're either up a goal and trying to hold on, or we're down a goal and trying to create opportunities to get back. That was actually a good thing. Winning or losing these games don't affect our seeding in conference. Maybe I'm putting a positive spin on it, but I truly believe having close games in this tournament was a good thing for us to go through."
"Pacific is like us. They have good young players who can score the ball. Last time we played them, they killed us with their 6-on-5. So this week, a lot of what we'll work on is our 5-on-6 defense and staying in our framework. The majority of ejections in that game were the type you want to stay away from -- on the perimeter, away from the goal, in the backcourt. We should be fouling Shaq under the basket, not fouling the best free-throw shooter at halfcourt."
"We're a young team, but at some point we can't say, `she's only a sophomore.' Yeah, she's a sophomore, but she's a sophomore who has played 26 games. She's almost a junior. We have to finish our steals and protect the ball on offense. We have to minimize things that will be an automatic turnover every time. I don't mind losing games, and in our conference, everyone is good. But I want to play well and force them to win the games. I don't want to give them away."
