May 3, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis juniors Greta Kohlmoos and Paige Virgil each earned spots on the 2017 Big West Women’s Water Polo All-Conference teams, the league office announced Wednesday morning. Kohlmoos captured first-team distinction while Virgil made the second team.

Kohlmoos, a center from Livermore, California, led the Aggies in goals (66), drawn exclusions (39) and drawn five-meter fouls (9). Her goals total ranks sixth in school history and represents the most ever by a two-meter player. Kohlmoos totaled 10 hat tricks for the year, including a double hat trick in the team’s 16-15 sudden-victory thriller against Hartwick on March 5. She also captured Big West Player of the Week honors on February 22, following a 13-goal weekend at the home-opening Aggie Shootout tournament.

A utility from Murrieta, California, Virgil finished second on the team and third in the conference with 65 goals. Adding in her 24 assists, she also led UC Davis with 89 total points while providing 21-for-46 shooting on power plays, 35 steals, 31 drawn exclusions and 14 field blocks. Virgil captured conference Player of the Week awards on February 15 and March 22, the first of which rewarded a seven-goal game against Long Beach State at the Triton Invitational. That game, which is tied for second in school history, stands among eight hat tricks during the 2017 season. She also scored six in the March 5 win over Hartwick, helping her amass the program’s No. 7 season goals total in history.

UC Irvine’s Mary Brooks was named Big West Conference Player of the Year, while Long Beach State’s Eirini Patras earned Freshman of the Year. Dan Klatt, now in his eighth year at the UCI helm, captured Coach of the Year.

UC Davis went 16-18 for the year, ranks 12th in Wednesday’s national Top 25, and placed fourth at the Big West tournament held at its own Schaal Aquatics Center last weekend.
