DAVIS, Calif. - Eight members of the UC Davis women's water polo team plus the program at large earned All-Academic accolades from the Associatiation of Collegiate Women's Water Polo Association, it was announced by Executive Director Larry Sanders this week. The honor roll features three classifications: Outstanding (3.71-4.0), Superior (3.41-3.70) and Excellent (3.20-3.40).
Senior Alicia Began, junior Katie Schlueter, sophomore Hannah Curran and freshman Elise Fullerton each made the Superior category. Seniors Dakotah Mohr and Kaylee Miller, junior Riane Woods and sophomore Erin Schlueter garnered nods in the Excellent category. Collectively, the Aggies compiled a team grade-point average of 3.17, 17th among all collegiate teams and the only of the University of California programs to earn such honors.
This marks the fourth All-Academic award for seniors Mohr and Began. Miller and Katie Schlueter each picked up their third honor, while Woods nabbed her second. It also represents the second straight year that Curran posted the team's highest GPA. Curran is a civil engineering major from Martinez, Calif.
Seven of the eight Aggies captured Big West Academic All-Conference earlier in the summer. Fullerton was the lone exception, as freshmen are not eligible for the conference's scholar-athlete program.
To be eligible for ACWPC All-Academic recognition, a student-athlete must have competed in at least 50 percent of the team's contests and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. (Note: due to the submission deadline, the 2012 spring quarter was not included in computing the UC Davis honorees' scores.)
UC Davis finished 18-13 overall with a 4-1 record in the Big West Conference. The Aggies won 13 of 14 games latein the season, finished second at their own conference championship tournament, and ranked among the national top 10 on two different occasions.
