The short story:
UC Davis softball collected a win via run rule and used a late Claire Shelton home run to secure another win in the Aggie doubleheader sweep of Big West foe CSU Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon.

LEADING OFF
  • Caroline Grimes had herself a day, getting both a win and a save while throwing 5.0 shutout innings over both games, collecting seven strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one walk
  • Ashley Sawai gave the Aggies six strong frames in her second game start, giving up just two earned runs while striking out three and walking no batters
  • Marley Panzeria had a breakout day, slashing .800/.800/1.600 in five at bats, hitting two doubles, one triple and she scored two runs
  • Alyssa Dethlefson went 4-for-6 over the two games, stealing a pair of bases, scoring three runs and smacking a triple
  • Kaylin Phillips had one of the best days of her young collegiate career, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
  • From the first inning, Grimes showed she would be in control striking out the first two batters on her way to sitting down the Roadrunners in order
  • Her dominance would continue, holding CSU Bakersfield hitless until the fourth inning when they finally got a runner on via a hit
  • But by the fourth, the Aggies had already built out a 5-0 lead, thanks to a three run second and a two run third which saw Phillips, Gia Felice, Rylee Reeves and Sydney Polli all record RBIs
  • Ellena Ediss entered the circle in the fifth and continued to shut down CSU Bakersfield, tossing two scoreless frames missing out on a save only because the Aggies would end things in the sixth
  • Sacrifice flies from both Dethlefson and Polli in the fourth and fifth set up the Aggies for a chance to end things in the sixth
  • And with Felice on second, Dethlefson smashed a ball that hit off the glove of the CSU Bakersfield fielder at third with such force it bounced down the left field line allowing for Felice to scamper home with would be the winning run in a 8-0 Aggie run-rule victory
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
  • Much like Grimes in the first game, Sawai came out on fire, sitting down CSU Bakersfield in order in the second and third innings while allowing just one hit in the opening frame
  • Over those three innings the Aggies built out a picket fence, scoring one run in each of the opening three frames getting RBI singles from Naomi Kalanetra and Shelton, to go along with Kalanetra's third inning sacrifice fly
  • CSU Bakersfield would chip away at the Aggie lead, scoring a run in the fourth and then with two in the sixth the Roadrunners tied things up at 3-3
  • UC Davis had an answer in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring three runs of their own thanks to a bit of power from Phillips and Shelton
  • Phillips would double home Vanessa Calvillo, who pinch ran for Reeves after her one out single, to put the Aggies back in the lead
  • But the Aggies were not done with Shelton stepping into the box, and with the first pitch she saw the Aggie left fielder deposited her first career home run over the left field wall to extend the Aggie lead to 6-3
  • Grimes then retook the circle to finish things off, sitting down the Roadrunners in order to collect her first save of the season and to secure the Aggie 6-3 win and doubleheader sweep
