FULLERTON, Calif. – The UC Davis softball team took care of business in its first Big West Conference series of the season, sweeping a doubleheader from preseason favorite Cal State Fullerton on the road on Friday evening.
The Aggies won game one by the score of 4-2, and then earned the series victory with a 3-1 win in the nightcap. After the day, the Ags improve to 15-7 on the season.
GAME 1
The UC Davis Aggies got a boost from junior Libbie McMahan, who strung together three hits in a 4-2 victory against the Titans in the front end of the Friday doubleheader.
Junior Kenedi Brown (8-3) got the win for the Ags (14-7, 1-0). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and struck out four in the winning effort.
In addition to her three hits, McMahan had a double, a two-run home run, and a walk to lead the Aggies. Junior Anna Dethlefson went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Sarah Starks also added an RBI.
The Aggies were trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board.
The Ags held the Titans scoreless before expanding their lead in the seventh inning. UC Davis scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Starks, which brought the Aggies lead to 4-1. Fullerton put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but UC Davis closed the door for the 4-2 win.
GAME 2
The Aggies took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 3-1 victory over Fullerton to earn the series win.
Junior Taylor Fitzgerald (3-2) started in the circle and picked up the win for UC Davis (15-7, 2-0). The righthander went five innings, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out two.
Delaney Diaz went 1-for-2 on the day with a double, a walk and two RBI.
The Aggies put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. UC Davis scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Diaz.
After the Titans pulled the score within one, senior Alyssa Ito came across to score an insurance run, which brought the Aggies lead to the final 3-1 score.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
